Q-Free and Iowa Department of Transportation partner to deploy Kinetic Mobility advanced traffic management system statewide
Q-Free, a global leader in mobility solutions for smart city infrastructure, today announced a multi-year agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) to update its statewide Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) with Q-Free’s Kinetic Mobility. Q-Free, which previously deployed the agency’s legacy ATMS, won the award in a competitive bid.
With this agreement, Iowa DOT will deploy multiple Kinetic Mobility modules including Events, Signs, Travel Time, Weather, Corridors, and Video. “We’re excited to continue our partnership with Iowa DOT,” said Whitney Nottage, P.E., PTOE, EVP of Traffic Management at Q-Free. “We’ve worked closely with them for years—including on the first cloud-hosted ATMS in the nation—and they’ve consistently been leaders in delivering top-tier service to residents and visitors alike. With Kinetic Mobility, they’re now getting a modular platform that not only puts them at the forefront of today’s technology but also prepares them for the future.” Thanks to its modular design, Kinetic Mobility enables agencies to select only the capabilities they need, eliminating unnecessary costs while maximizing value.
Christoper Butler, PMP, Q-Free Senior Project Manager for Iowa, believes the breadth, modularity, and security of Kinetic Mobility—combined with the ability to demonstrate it live—set Q-Free apart during the selection process. “Iowa responded very strongly to seeing the platform’s functionality and ease of use in real time,” he said. “When prospective customers see it in action, they often experience that ‘light bulb’ moment, recognizing just how flexible the platform is in meeting their unique needs.”
The new contract includes an 18-month set-up and deployment phase followed by a minimum two-year maintenance agreement. Iowa DOT manages more than 9,600 miles of state and U.S. roads and has consistently led the way in developing strategies and deploying technology to keep Iowa’s roadways safe and efficient. The agency collaborates with more than 600 third-party users including maintenance garages, 911/law enforcement (e911) centers, and neighboring states, sharing crucial road information.
Kinetic Mobility introduces a modern, future-ready approach to ATMS technology, and this agreement will mark its second statewide deployment, following a successful rollout in West Virginia earlier this year.
