Award-winning variable speed limit project uses Q-Free ATMS technology
Collaborative project with Virginia DOT improves safety and mobility on one of the most congested corridors in the US
Congratulations to the Virginia Department of Transportation (Virginia DOT) for receiving a 2023 America’s Transportation Award for receiving an Operational Excellent Award in the Southern Association of State Transportation Officials or SASHTO region.
America’s Transportation Awards are a contest that recognizes the best transportation projects in the United States, and how they benefit the communities they serve. They awards are sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the American Automobile Association (AAA), and the US Chamber of Commerce.
At the recent 2023 America’s Transportation Awards SASHTO Region, Virginia DOT won the Operations Excellence award in the Small Project category – projects under $25M – for implementing variable speed limits on Interstate 95 (I-95).
I-95 is a crucial highway for moving people and goods along the East Coast. To make travel safer and smoother, Virginia DOT installed variable speed limit signs along 15 miles of the northbound I-95. Q-Free’s cloud-based ATMS software manages the corridor, detecting congestion and then adjusting speed limits on the new signs. The results are award-worthy: a significant reduction in speeding vehicles in that stretch of highway and a decrease of more than 20% in severe crashes causing injuries or fatalities.
Working with Virginia DOT and their partners on this innovative and award-winning project was an honor. We look forward to continued collaboration and support to improve transportation across the state.
