Summer Intern 2027 – Tolling Technology Product Development

Summer Intern 2027 – Tolling Technology Product Development

We are currently accepting applications for our 2027 Summer Internship program in Trondheim, Norway.

The internship program will run from 14 June to 13 August.

We’re looking for students who are curious about technology and innovation, up for a challenge, and a team player with strong communication skills to take part in our 2027 Summer Internship program.

At Q-Free, you join a team that contributes to making traffic and mobility more sustainable by offering technology that increases traffic flow, reduces emissions, and enhances traffic safety.

“The big little company”

Imagine a place where every day is a little step out into the world. A place where your dining room is a melting pot of cultures and ideas. That’s Q-Free. We pride ourselves on being a company where you’re not just part of the team, but where your voice can shape the future of global technology solutions. We’re small enough that you know everyone, but big enough that your work can find its way out into the world.

Responsibilities

Our Tolling Technology Products department develops products and technologies for intelligent transportation systems, with a focus on tolling and road user charging solutions. Our product portfolio includes onboard equipment, such as tolling tags, as well as roadside systems including DSRC transceivers and supporting infrastructure.

We work across the entire product development lifecycle, from early concepts and prototypes to testing, verification, and deployment of customer-ready products. This means working with electronics, embedded software, RF systems, computer vision, and cloud-connected technologies in multidisciplinary teams.

As a Summer Intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers on real development projects. Depending on your background and interests, you may contribute to electronics design, embedded programming, laboratory testing, RF measurements, automation, data analysis, or prototype development.

Q-Free is also developing next-generation Road User Charging systems, where traditional tolling technologies are combined with IoT, positioning systems, and connected services to enable reliable, secure, and fair mobility solutions for the future.

Some of the work we do in our Tolling Technology Products department

  • Electronics design, simulation, and prototyping
  • Firmware and embedded software development, ranging from bare-metal applications to RTOS-based systems
  • Testing and characterization of electronics, including power consumption, RF performance, EMC, and system-level verification
  • RF measurements, antenna characterization, and wireless communication systems
  • Development of automated test systems and verification tools using Python
  • Software development for user interfaces, control systems, and supporting tools
  • GNSS and positioning technologies for intelligent transportation applications
  • System integration and validation of hardware and software solutions
  • Taking products from concept and prototype through testing, verification, and deployment

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with an interest in one or more of the following fields

  • Electronics design, schematic capture, PCB layout, and circuit simulation
  • Embedded programming using C/C++, Python, Linux, Docker, and CI/CD tools
  • Radio technology, signal processing, antennas, and wireless communications
  • Positioning technologies such as GNSS, IMUs, and sensor fusion
  • Prototype development and testing using Raspberry Pi, 3D printing, and laboratory equipment
  • Test planning, measurements, and data analysis
  • Cybersecurity and secure systems

What do we offer?

  • Meaningful work on real products used by millions of road users around the world
  • Hands-on experience with modern engineering tools, laboratory equipment, and development methods
  • Mentorship and collaboration with experienced engineers across multiple disciplines
  • Exposure to electronics, embedded software, RF engineering, computer vision, and intelligent transportation systems
  • The opportunity to take ownership of your work and contribute to real projects
  • A culture that values diversity, inclusion, learning, and professional growth

Internship Details

The internship period will be from 14 June to 13 August with two weeks’ vacation in week 28 and 29. The workplace is our headquarters in Trondheim.
