Soon you will not have to drive around to find parking

Imagine that you are on your way to a big and popular shopping center on a Saturday afternoon when “everyone else” is also there to shop.​

You turn into the parking lot, so you have to go on a long tour to find a place.​

Fast forwarding to a not too distant future: On the mobile you will get a map of all available parking spaces in the mall. You book and pay for one of them before driving. When you arrive, the app leads you to the place.​

Low power and low data

The technology that fixes this is called NB-IoT (NarrowBand Internet of Things-on Norwegian Narrowband for the Internet of Things).​

In short, it is about small sensors that exchange information via a new type of mini-mobile network that requires extremely low power and data capacity.​​

Currently, we are just talking about smaller pilot projects.​

But during the year, NB-IoT will be launched in Norway, and according to plan, the whole country will receive coverage by 2020.

Tried out in Trondheim

In Trondheim, Telenor conducted a collaboration with the freight company Q-Free in December, a pilot project that worked exactly the way we describe, with the exception of the order and payment bit.​

Via the mobile phone, the drivers could see if there were free parking spaces at an entry parking at Ranheim.​

– The sensors like the Q-Free team are so sensitive that they “see” the difference in snow in the parking lot and a car. Thus they could also notify about the need for salting or salting, “says communications manager Kristine Meek in Telenor.​
