Supported by Q-Free, Queensland Motorways has since November 2009 operated a free-flow tolling system which does away with the need for toll booths.

The core of the organisation’s operating system is IBM’s Identification, Rating and Interoperability Services (IRIS) subsystem, which picks up information generated at the roadside and uses stored business logic to execute a series of tolling-related transactions. This is allied to a comprehensive SAP customer relations management database which holds vehicle and owner profile information.

Q-Free’s market-leading Intrada Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) back office solution provides the recognition function for video tolling operations. This software was selected because it is unique in its ability to determine the registration numbers and the states of origin of all passing vehicles.
