Video Tolling
In some markets, the use of only video cameras to identify the vehicles might be an interesting option rather than deploying a tag and beacon based solution.
In particular, if the traffic affected by the system to a large extent is local traffic and the access to vehicle registers is good, Video Tolling can be a very interesting solution. Video Tolling is also an option to consider in case a number of motorists requests interoperable services. Rather than exchanging OBU identities, the operators can exchange video fingerprints, thereby securing mutual identification of the vehicle. Video Tolling offers high performance solutions with very low initial investment and offers an excellent path to interoperability in case operators with noncompatible technical solutions seek for interoperability. Due to the fact that Q-Free’s ANPR software offers extremely high read rates with a very low corresponding error rate, Video Tolling becomes a viable option for toll road operators.
All of the world’s vehicle number plates can be used for the purpose of vehicle identification automatically through ANPR cameras. On the basis of a reference set of vehicle images from the system considering the option, Q-Free can give firm statements with respect to the read rate to expect. The Stockholm Congestion Tax System is a pure Video Tolling application, in excess of 96 percent of all traffic is automatically identified and correctly decoded by the Q-Free ANPR software, leaving only a small portion to be manually inspected.
